Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Waterfall — what we do, how it works, and how you can get involved.

General

What is Waterfall?

Waterfall captures the irreplaceable wisdom of seniors — life lessons, moral reasoning, emotional intelligence — and turns it into AI models that any technology can use. We're building the 'wisdom layer' for AI: two APIs (the Wisdom Model and the Water Engine) that give AI systems the kind of judgment, empathy, and moral reasoning that only comes from decades of lived human experience.

Why is this needed?

AI can reason, but it can't tell you whether a decision is right, kind, or human. It hallucinate empathy. The wisdom needed to fix this doesn't exist on the internet — it lives in the minds of seniors. Every day, 10,000 seniors die in the US alone. Each one takes a lifetime of irreplaceable experience with them. Waterfall captures that wisdom before it's lost forever.

How is this different from ChatGPT or other AI?

ChatGPT and other LLMs are trained on internet text — articles, forums, books. They're great at reasoning but lack moral depth and emotional intelligence grounded in real lived experience. Waterfall's models are trained on structured wisdom data collected directly from seniors through research-grounded interviews. This data doesn't exist anywhere else. It's not on the internet. It's not in books. We're building it.

What are the two products?

The Wisdom Model provides moral reasoning, life guidance, and human judgment. Ask it any life question and get wisdom-grounded answers with reasoning chains and citations back to real (anonymized) senior experiences. The Water Engine is emotional intelligence as a service — it reads the room, detects emotional undercurrents, suggests emotionally intelligent responses, and tracks conversation dynamics over time.

Is the wisdom anonymous?

By default, yes. All personal identifying information is stripped from training data. Seniors choose their consent tier: platform-only, training, API access, or attributed (credited by name). They can change their mind and revoke consent at any time.

For Seniors

Who can participate?

Anyone aged 65 or older with life experience to share. You don't need to be tech-savvy — we handle everything. Family members can also help a parent or grandparent participate using our family-assisted mode.

What does a session look like?

It's just a conversation. A trained facilitator (or the app) asks you thoughtful questions like 'What do you wish someone had told you at 20?' or 'Tell me about a time you had to forgive someone.' You answer by talking — no typing, no technology hassle. Facility sessions run 30-45 minutes. App sessions are 10-15 minutes at your own pace.

Do I get paid?

Yes. Seniors earn from a revenue-sharing pool funded by companies that use the Waterfall API. The more your wisdom is accessed, the more you earn. This is real compensation, not just thank-yous.

Is it safe? What about my privacy?

Absolutely. You control exactly how your wisdom is used through our multi-tier consent system. All personal information is stripped from training data. You can revoke consent at any time and your data will be completely removed. We comply with HIPAA where applicable and follow strict data protection protocols.

Is storytelling actually good for me?

Yes — it's clinically proven. A meta-analysis of 20 controlled studies found that reminiscence and life review therapy has a clinically significant effect on reducing late-life depression. It also improves cognitive function, enhances sense of purpose, and reduces feelings of isolation. Sharing your stories is therapeutic.

Can my family help me participate?

Absolutely. Our family-assisted mode lets a child or grandchild help you record your stories using the app. It's a meaningful way to connect across generations while preserving your legacy.

For Facilities

How do senior homes and clinics partner with Waterfall?

We provide everything needed to run wisdom-sharing sessions as an activity for your residents: training for your staff, a facilitator tablet app, quality recording equipment, and ongoing support. Sessions are designed to be therapeutic and engaging — residents love them. There's no cost to the facility.

What equipment is provided?

We provide a pre-configured tablet with our facilitator app, a directional microphone optimized for elderly speech patterns, and optional multi-sensory cue materials (photos, music prompts). Everything arrives ready to use.

Is this compliant with healthcare regulations?

Yes. We maintain HIPAA compliance where applicable, obtain informed consent from all participants (or their legal representatives), and our consent process has been designed in consultation with elder care ethics advisors. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest.

Do facilities earn revenue?

Yes. Facilities receive a share of the revenue generated when wisdom collected at their location is accessed through our API. This creates a new, ongoing revenue stream for your organization while providing a meaningful activity for residents.

What types of facilities can partner?

Senior living communities, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, VA centers, adult day programs, memory care centers, churches, community centers, hospitals with geriatric departments, hospice organizations, and any organization that serves seniors.

For Developers

How do I get API access?

Request access through our contact form or email us directly. We'll set you up with an Explorer account (free, 100 queries/month) so you can start testing immediately. Your API key will look like wf_live_xxxx and authenticates via the X-API-Key header.

What's the latency like?

The Wisdom Model query endpoint typically responds in 200-500ms. Water Engine reads are faster at 100-300ms. We use edge caching for common query patterns and maintain a 99.9% uptime SLA for Builder and Enterprise tiers.

Can I fine-tune the model for my use case?

Enterprise customers can request custom fine-tuning on specific wisdom domains (e.g., healthcare scenarios, education contexts, relationship guidance). We also offer domain-specific model variants that focus on particular areas of wisdom.

What languages are supported?

The Wisdom Model currently supports English, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Mandarin Chinese. Wisdom is collected from seniors across cultures, so responses include cultural context awareness. More languages are being added as we expand collection to new regions.

Is there a sandbox environment?

Yes. Your Explorer account includes access to a sandbox with synthetic test data so you can build and test your integration before going live. Sandbox requests don't count against your quota.

How is this different from just calling GPT-4 with a system prompt?

Fundamentally different. GPT-4 with a 'be wise' prompt still generates from internet text. Waterfall's models are trained on structured wisdom data collected through peer-reviewed methodologies from real seniors. Every response traces back to real human experience — with reasoning chains, citations, and emotional context that no prompt engineering can replicate. The data is the moat.

For Youth

How do I use Waterfall as a young person?

Think of it as having access to the wisest grandparent you can imagine — one who's navigated every situation you're facing. Ask any life question through our app or web interface: career decisions, relationship advice, dealing with failure, understanding your parents. You'll get real wisdom from real people who've lived through it.

Is the advice personalized to me?

Yes. Our situation-matching engine finds wisdom from seniors who navigated remarkably similar circumstances to yours. The more context you provide about your situation, the more relevant and specific the guidance becomes.

Can I hear the actual seniors' voices?

In many cases, yes. With attributed consent, you can listen to audio clips of seniors sharing their stories in their own words. You can also browse curated story collections by topic, era, or theme.

Is it free?

The basic experience is free for individual users. You can ask questions, browse wisdom, and listen to stories at no cost. Premium features like personalized wisdom playlists and deeper follow-up conversations may require a subscription in the future.

Data & Ethics

How do you ensure the wisdom is high quality?

Every piece of wisdom goes through a rigorous pipeline: AI-powered annotation extracts principles and moral dimensions, automated quality gates check for coherence and specificity, and human reviewers verify accuracy and cultural sensitivity. Only validated records make it into the training data. We score on five dimensions: specificity, universality, novelty, coherence, and authenticity.

What about bias in the wisdom?

We actively collect from diverse senior populations across cultures, geographies, socioeconomic backgrounds, and life experiences. Our taxonomy spans 5 domains and 26 sub-domains to ensure broad coverage. Moral dimensions are classified using Haidt's Moral Foundations Theory, which captures cross-cultural ethical reasoning. We continuously audit for representation gaps.

Can wisdom be wrong?

Wisdom is inherently subjective — it reflects lived experience, not objective truth. That's why every API response includes a confidence score, reasoning chain, and citations. We explicitly state in our Terms of Service that wisdom is not professional advice. The API is designed to complement human judgment, not replace it.

What happens if a senior passes away?

Their wisdom lives on according to their consent preferences. This is the core mission — ensuring that the irreplaceable life experience of seniors is preserved and continues to help people long after the storyteller is gone. Families can access their loved one's wisdom legacy through our platform.

How do you handle sensitive topics?

Our question framework uses graduated intimacy and confession framing to create safe spaces for sharing. Sensitive content is flagged by automated quality gates and reviewed by trained human moderators. Content involving abuse, trauma, or crisis situations is handled with extra care, and appropriate resources are provided when needed.
